365 Days to Digital Mastery – Day 15: Curious Duck

365 Days to Digital Mastery – Day 15: Curious Duck

My Procreate project today is a curious duck, taken mostly from imagination. In reality, I got the idea for the little duck from a stuffed animal I saw on Pinterest that I thought was adorable. I want one. But about the artwork…

I drew a basic outline with the HB pencil, then used the Nikko Rull brush to build out the shapes and shadows. Sticking with the basic methods I used for the teddy bear on day 11, I eventually ended up with a piece of art that I feel pretty ok about. I think my biggest challenge when I’m not using a reference, doing a study, or making a sketch is to focus more on composition and subject. The truth is that after 20 years away from art school those basic concepts have become a lot less intuitive. But a step in the right direction? I think so. How about you?

365 Days to Digital Mastery – Day 14: Rolling Pin

365 Days to Digital Mastery – Day 14: Rolling Pin

Another idea from 642 Things to Draw from Chronicle Books brings you a rolling pin. In Procreate I decided to try a different brush than the Nikko Rull, my undisputed favorite so far. I went back to the round brush and tried to create gradient shadows, much like I would have done in Adobe Illustrator. Unfortunately, I hate the way this turned out. I debated even sharing it, but in the end it’s what I created and I did learn something very valuable. I most likely won’t repeat this experiment.

365 Days to Digital Mastery – Day 13: Teapot

Another idea from 642 Things to Draw from Chronicle Books brings you a teapot. In Procreate I once again used the Nikko’s Rull brush – my new favorite by a long shot – to build out the shape of a fancy teapot for a quick value study. As my 365 day project rolls along I think I’m getting quite a bit more comfortable with my digital tools. I know it’s getting a lot more fun!

365 Days of Digital Mastery: Day 11 – Teddy Bear

365 Days of Digital Mastery: Day 11 – Teddy Bear

Today in Procreate I finished the teddy bear project that I had previewed last week. I used the Nikko Rull brush to keep some texture while adding layers of color. I really like how this turned out, and it leads me to think this is probably the best technique for making some quality artwork. What do you think?

Edit: Now a print on Society6!

365 Days of Digital Mastery: Day 10 – Pear

365 Days of Digital Mastery: Day 10 – Pear

My subject in Procreate today is a pear, a companion of yesterday’s orange. I used the same technique, using the Nikko Rull brush and layering in colors. I did the entire pear on a single layer instead of using a separate layer for each color, as I’ve done in the past. This technique made it a little harder to make corrections, but in general it was a good process for such a simple subject.

365 Days of Digital Mastery: Day 9 – Orange

365 Days of Digital Mastery: Day 9 – Orange

My subject today is an orange, once more suggested by 642 Things to Draw by Chronicle Books. In Procreate I chose to use the Nikko Rull brush, which I think added a nice texture to the surface of the orange. It blended very well between the various colors that I laid in as well, and felt pretty natural as far as a painting technique. I think the Nikko Rull brush may become one of my staples for creating artwork. Of the several brushes that I’ve used, it’s definitely winning me over.

365 Days of Digital Mastery: Day 8 – Squirrel (WIP)

365 Days of Digital Mastery: Day 8 – Squirrel (WIP)

Today I offer a work in progress. I chose a squirrel today, which I believe was originally suggested through 642 Things to Draw by Chronicle Books. I decided to use the same technique in Procreate that I used for the mushroom a couple of days ago. I am using the HB pencil and layering in colors. For the tail I decided to try the short hair brush, which I think makes a lot more sense here than on the sea dollar yesterday. Hopefully I can complete this tomorrow and have a finished squirrel to show you. I also had another treatment planned for this squirrel, so I may create two different creatures and see which you like best.

365 Days of Digital Mastery: Day 7 – Sea Dollar

365 Days of Digital Mastery: Day 7 – Sea Dollar

Today I tried something completely different. I chose to try a simple item, a Sea Dollar, as suggested by 642 Things to Draw by Chronicle Books. I started painting using the round brush, then overlaid the colors with a texture brush called “Short Hair” around the edges. The sea dollar is kind of fuzzy everywhere, so I started using the “Fine Hair” brush to cover the rest of the surface. I learned a lot about using these brushes – mostly that these are great if you actually want hair – but I don’t think they are quite right for what I was trying to achieve. I’m not really thrilled with the end product, but having learned a bit more about using my digital tools through the experiment was good. So overall not a bad effort, but needs improvement.

#365D2DM – 365 Days to Digital Mastery: Day 6 – Pickle

Today I painted a pickle in Procreate, again suggested in 642 Things to Draw by Chronicle Books. I used the Nikko Rull brush in the painting section to see if the texture suited a pickle. I thought it did, and it blended exceedingly well. I didn’t adjust the opacity at all on the brush, and the pressure sensitivity with the Apple pencil felt just right. I think I could have continued working on the pickle and the various textures and blending, but I like the way it looks from a bit of a distance, as well as the process I used to make it. I will definitely use this brush again.
